Workshops and Special ProgramsAddiction Workshop
Addiction is a compulsive relationship with mood-altering experience. That can occur with a substance like alcohol, other drugs or food. Or it can occur with a process like sex, gambling or working.
Over time, this relationship with a substance or process rewires the brain. It hijacks its reward system. Basically, it drives the addict to do addictive behaviors even when they intend to do something else. They lose control. They can’t stop, even when they try. They’re preoccupied with acting out in their addiction. They lose track of time when in it. Their behavior intensifies. So they suffer major consequences – severe family problems, divorce, job loss, even suicidal thoughts.
Research shows that chronic drug use changes the structure and function of the brain’s neurons. These changes can last for weeks, months, or even years after the last “fix.” This is true for other addictions as well. Thus, addiction is a progressive disease of the brain. Yet, most addicts are not physically addicted. They’re psychologically addicted to their drug of choice.
To help better understand addiction, New Leaf Center presents this workshop in two parts. The first presentation discusses The Addicted Brain. The second one covers The Addictive Personality.
In The Addicted Brain presentation, we look at how the brain changes on its journey to becoming addicted. Participants will see the latest science on the addicted brain process through a PowerPoint presentation. This is followed by an interactive group discussion.
The Addictive Personality part of the workshop details the steps that lead people to psychological addiction. It clearly shows how hard it is for those with addictions to recognize this process as it is taking place. Usually the person who has an addiction is the last one to know! Again, this PowerPoint presentation is followed by an interactive group discussion.
Both presentations end with a rundown of how people can undo the addictive process. This helps the addicted individual reclaim a normal, healthy life. The two-part workshop is designed for everyone who has an addiction, their spouses or partners, other family members and significant others. All are welcome.
